The Voice of the Rain

And who art thou? said I to the soft-falling shower, Which, strange to tell, gave me an answer, as here translated: I am the Poem of Earth, said the voice of the rain, Eternal I rise impalpable out the land and the bottomless sea, Upward to heaven, whence, vaguely form'd, altogether changed, and yet the same, I descend to lave the droughts, atomies, dust-layers of the globe, And all that in them without me were seeds only, latent, unborn; And forever, by day and night, I give back life to my own origin, and make pure and beautify it; [For song, issuing from its birth-place, after fulfilment, wandering, Reck'd or unreck'd, duly with love returns.]
— Walt Whitman
i
What does the speaker find unusual about the rain?
Answer
The speaker finds it unusual that the rain (the soft-falling shower) actually answers back when asked "Who art thou?" — which is "strange to tell."
ii
Where does the rain originate?
Answer
The rain originates from the land and the bottomless sea — it rises impalpably (invisibly) upward from the earth and ocean.
iii
What does the rain wash away?
Answer
The rain descends to wash away droughts, atomies (tiny dust particles) and dust-layers of the globe.
iv
Why does the rain come back to its origin?
Answer
The rain returns to give back life, purify and beautify its own origin — the earth and sea from which it rose.
v
In what way are the rain and music similar?
Answer
Both rain and music (song) originate from a source, travel outward, fulfil their purpose, and eventually return to their origin with love — whether noticed or not ("reck'd or unreck'd").

Read the text about internet safety and do the tasks.
10 marks

Modern life is fundamentally intertwined with the internet. Nearly every daily task now has the opportunity for online integration, and almost everyone owns multiple devices. The more accounts and devices you have online, the greater the potential for criminals to access your personal information.

Online safety is important for everyone, especially vulnerable groups like children, teenagers and senior citizens. Here are some basic tips: Use strong passwords that combine letters, numbers and special characters. Use different passwords for different accounts. Change your passwords often. Do not share passwords with others. Store passwords in an encrypted file. Avoid "auto-login" — uncheck "Keep me signed in" and "Remember my password" options.

15 marks

Malala Yousafzai, born on July 12, 1997 in Mingora, Swat Valley, Pakistan, is a Pakistani activist for female education. Her father Ziauddin ran a girls' school and influenced her passion for education. By the time she was ten, Taliban extremists had taken control of Swat Valley — girls could no longer attend school, and by end of 2008 over 400 schools had been destroyed.

On 9 October 2012, a Taliban gunman shot Yousafzai on her school bus. One bullet passed through her head, neck and ended on her shoulder. Nine months later, on her 16th birthday in 2013, she gave a speech at the United Nations urging world leaders to change education policies. "The terrorists thought they would change our aims... but nothing changed except this: weakness, fear and hopelessness died. Strength, power and courage were born."

On 10 October 2014, Yousafzai became the co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize (shared with Kailash Satyarthi) for her struggle against suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education.

Riya: Hey Priya, you've been on your phone for the past two hours! Don't you think that's too much?

Priya: I know, I know. I'm just scrolling through social media. It's so addictive!

Riya: That's exactly the problem. Do you know how badly misusing mobile phones affects our health?

Priya: What effects are you talking about? It doesn't seem that serious.

Riya: Seriously, it damages your eyesight, causes poor posture, disrupts sleep and even leads to anxiety and depression. And we waste so much time we could use for studying.

Priya: Hmm, I've noticed I can't focus on my studies for long. Do you think the phone is responsible?

Riya: Absolutely. We should set a time limit for using our phones. Maybe one hour a day for entertainment and no phones after 9 pm.

Priya: That sounds reasonable. Let's make a deal to follow these rules together!

Subject: Growing trend of fast food consumption among youngsters

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to draw your attention to the alarming increase in fast food consumption among young people in Nepal, which poses serious risks to public health.

Causes: The main reasons include aggressive advertising by fast food companies, busy lifestyles that leave little time for home-cooked meals, peer pressure and the ready availability of fast food outlets near schools and colleges. Young people are attracted by the taste, convenience and low cost of these foods.

Effects: Regular consumption of fast food leads to obesity, high blood pressure, type-2 diabetes, heart diseases and nutritional deficiencies. It also affects mental health — contributing to anxiety and low energy levels. Schools have reported declining academic performance among students who skip nutritious meals.

Measures: The government should regulate fast food advertising directed at children. Schools should teach nutrition education and ban fast food from school canteens. Parents must encourage home-cooked meals and healthy eating habits.

I hope your esteemed newspaper will highlight this issue to raise public awareness.

Yours faithfully,
[Your name]
